Understanding the cycle, not just the argument
One of the most common things I see in couples is a repetitive cycle, where each person's way of protecting themselves unintentionally reinforces the other's fears. One partner withdraws to avoid conflict while the other pursues to feel connected, and the more one withdraws, the more the other pursues, leaving both feeling misunderstood and alone.
Working with couplesNot who's right, but what's underneath
My approachMy approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory while remaining active, engaged and practical. I help clients understand the emotional themes that repeat in their lives, particularly in close relationships, and how early relational experiences continue to shape present day reactions.
What shiftsAs couples develop insight into these dynamics, they begin to recognize that they aren't simply fighting about the dishes, money, or parenting. They're often struggling with deeper needs for safety, closeness, autonomy, or feeling valued. That awareness creates space to respond differently, instead of reacting automatically.
The goal isn't to determine who's right or wrong. It's to help each partner understand themselves and each other more deeply, so they can interrupt old patterns, communicate with more empathy, and build a relationship that feels more secure, connected, and authentic.
