Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences that have become “stuck,” so they can be integrated in a healthier way. It's much more than moving your eyes back and forth. Bilateral stimulation is one component of a larger process.

Why I use EMDR

What it does

EMDR does not erase memories. Rather, it helps transform the way they are stored so that individuals can remember what happened without becoming overwhelmed by the emotions or physical reactions associated with the experience. Clients often report feeling calmer, more grounded, and able to respond to life's challenges with greater resilience.

How it fits the work

I don't think of EMDR as separate from the therapy. It's another way of deepening the work when the timing is right. In individual therapy, we're usually first building the relationship, understanding your history, identifying patterns, and making sure you have enough internal resources to tolerate processing difficult material.

If I notice that someone feels stuck, keeps having intense emotional or physical reactions tied to the past, or understands something intellectually but can't seem to shift it emotionally, that's often when I begin talking with them about EMDR. I integrate it thoughtfully rather than as a stand-alone technique, moving between psychodynamic exploration and EMDR depending on what you need.

In practice

I offer EMDR both in person and over telehealth. I trained in EMDR through the Institute for Creative Mindfulness, and you can read more about my background and training.
